Can I Design My Own Shed?

A Quick Heads Up...

In most cases, you get what you pay for, and the 'Shed World' is no exception. We appreciate that there are sheaper products out there, but like you... we've recently looked around to see what quality products are available at the cheaper end of the market, and frankly - there's not that much out there.

If you take the fixed costs of labour to manufacture and deliver, along with the cost of business overheads, the savings you can make are on things such as self assembly and poor quality materials. For example - not all timber is the same, some construction methods are missing vital components, and not everyone can put up a shed.

Bearing in mind that you are buying the shed - the materials, construction and assembly are the most important part of the purchase for you.

Basen on those requirements, our experince in this field points us towards providing a great product at a competitive price that is built to do the job for a considerable length of time.

Key Features

Cladding

Tanalised Scandinavian Redwood - 15mm

Scandinavian redwood is a slow grown softwood sourced from FSC forests, and is much more durable than timber from the Baltic area (such as Russia). The timber is consitently graded to ensure our purchasing team can confidently buy the correct timber for a quality building. Once graded it is kiln dried and machined to an exact standard before being tanalised (pressure treated) for protection against rot and decay.

Framing

38mm x 50mm Redwood

PAR - Tanalised

Framing is probably the most important part of the shed as it forms the basis of the construction. We use PAR (planed all round) timber, regularised to a specific size to ensure consistency during manufacture. In opposition is rough sawn timber, which often gives splinters to customers whilst not giving manufacturers a standard size to build from (due to size inconsistencies). Rough sawn timber is also cheaper as it doesn't usually meet structural grading, hence it doesn't get planed to size.

Doors

Box Framed,

Ledged & Braced

The door is often the part of the shed you notice most, as it is where you enter and exit the building. A poor quality door can be very frustrating when it is tight, or out of line, and those without a handle... well I won't go there!

The box frame along with the ledge and brace (Z frame) provides stability to the door, so that it remains sturdy throughout it's lifetime. The addition of a mortice lock and key looks nice, but the time taken to fit is where the cost implicaion lies.

Roof

Polyester Felt / Onduline

Overhangs

The quality of the roof covering can add years to the lifespan of your shed, and not all coverings are the same. Shed felt can be as thin as paper, and also sand based (which washes away in the rain) and is usually supplied with the cheaper models. Polyester felt is a relatively new concept, and is much more pliable and flexible offering more durability. This product is available in different thicknesses which determines durability.

Onduline is a compressed felt in a corrugated design, sprayed with a resin to offer excellent durability for a lightweight roof.

We must also mention the roof overhangs as they are there to keep water off the sides of the building.

Trims

Barge Boards / Cover Strips

Aftercare

The finish of the building is really where you see the value in the product that you buy. The cheaper end products will cut corners by not including fascia boards or corner trims, which leave the edges exposed to the elements.

Manufacturers who are proud of their products will provide good quality barge boards and corner cover strips, as they strive to keep improving their designs. It is likely that they listen to the customers needs and are there later on should the customer need any aftercare service in the future.

Cheap is not always cheerful

When making a purchase, it's essential to remember that price isn't everything. Focus on the value and quality of the product to ensure you're making a wise investment. Consider the long-term benefits and how it meets your needs, rather than just the initial cost. Make informed decisions that will serve you well in the future.

When selecting a new shed for your garden, it's crucial to thoroughly examine its specifications. Look for the high standards set by our buildings to ensure your purchase meets exceptional quality. While these buildings may come with a slightly higher price tag than typical options, rest that no corners are cut in their. Remember, while you might save a bit with cheaper alternatives, you truly get the quality and features you desire?

It makes so much sense to take a look before you buy, so you can be sure that you are getting the quality that you want. Whilst you may find a cheaper shed on the internet, the question you have to ask is whether the building that arrives is what you are expecting. And if you have to assemble it yourself, you may well find it is as cost effective as you think it is.

Specifications - built to last

The Bentley Apex has an eaves height of 1.83m (6’) rising to a ridge height of 2.3m for the standard height buildings. The taller height buildings have an eaves height of 1.915m, with a ridge height of 2.4m.

Adding Onduline roof sheets increases the overall ridge height by 100mm.

All standard buildings comply with the 2.5m maximum height restriction imposed when erecting a building under Permitted Development.

The buildings are constructed with tanalised timber and can include a vapour barrier if required. We do recommend that buildings are retreated within 3 months, unless painted and then every year for continuous protection. All of our buildings can be upgraded to a painted finish
